Independent Reading is the reading students choose to do on their own. It reflects the reader’s personal choice of the material to be read as well as the time and place to read it. Independent reading is done for information or for pleasure. The amount of free reading done outside of school has consistently been found to relate to growth of vocabulary, reading comprehension, verbal fluency and general information. Students who read independently become better readers, score higher on achievement tests in all subjects areas, and have greater content knowledge than those who do not.
All students need to be encouraged to read! Please talk with your child about the books that they are reading throughout the year. Talking about books and stories with your child might open up conversations that you wouldn't otherwise have. Books allow us to enter imaginatively into someone else’s life, while teaching us to sympathize with others, and allowing us to learn a little about ourselves too!
For sixth grade Language Arts, students will be required to read a minimum of 20 minutes each night. Students will not have to complete a reading log, however, many class assignments will be focused around each student's independent reading book. Students will often conference with the teacher to discuss their independent reading books.
