Program of Study: Healthcare Diagnostic and Healthcare Therapeutic
Medical Terminology: (one credit) (9th-12th):
The Medical Terminology course is designed to introduce students to the structure of medical terms, including prefixes, suffixes, word roots, singular and plural forms and medical abbreviations. The course allows students to achieve comprehension of medical vocabulary appropriate to medical procedures, human anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology.
Medical Terminology (Dual Credit): (one credit) (9th-12th):
The Medical Terminology course is designed for the study of word origin and structure through the introduction of prefixes, suffixes, root words, plurals, abbreviation and symbols, surgical procedures, medical specialties and diagnostic procedures. This dual credit course is offered through Temple College and will require payment of tuition. This course will be taught at the college level. Completion of this course will result in 3 hours of college credit.
Health Science Theory : (one credit)
Prerequisite: Biology and at least one credit in a course from the health science cluster. Recommended: Medical Terminology
The Health Science Theory course is designed to provide for the development of advanced knowledge and skills related to a wide variety of health careers. Students will employ hand-on experiences for continue knowledge and skill development.
Anatomy & Physiology: (one science/health science credit )(11th-12th)
Prerequisite: Biology, Chemistry, IPC, or Physics. Recommended prerequisite: course from the health science cluster.
Students study a variety of topics, including the structure and function of the human body and the interaction of body systems for maintaining homeostasis. Students conduct laboratory investigations, use scientific methods and make informed decisions using critical thinking and scientific problem-solving.
Mathematics for Medical Professions: (one math/health science credit) (11th-12th)
Prerequisites: Geometry & Algebra II
Students will explore the mathematical skills required for various careers in the health professions. Students will use a problem-solving model that incorporates analyzing given information, formulating a plan or strategy, determining a solution, justifying the solution, and evaluating the problem-solving process and the reasonableness of the solution
Pathophysiology:(one science/health science credit) (11th-12th)
Prerequisites: Biology, Chemistry, at least one Level 2 Health Science Course or higher. Recommended: Anatomy and Physiology
The Pathophysiology course is designed for students to study disease processes and how humans are affected. Emphasis is placed on prevention and treatment of diseases.
Pharmacology : (one credit) (11th/12th)
Prerequisites: Biology, Chemistry and at least one Level 2 Health Science Course or higher.
The Pharmacology course is designed to study how natural and synthetic chemical agents such as drugs affect biological systems. Knowledge of the properties of therapeutic agents is vital in providing quality health care. It is an ever-changing, growing body of information that continually demands greater amounts of time and education from health care workers.
Practicum in Health Science (2 credits) (12th)
Prerequisite: Health Science Theory and Biology. Recommended Anatomy & Physiology and Medical Terminology
The practicum in Health Science course is designed to provide for the development of advanced knowledge and skills related to a wide variety of health careers. Students will employ hands-on experiences for continued knowledge and skill development. Students will prepare and sit for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, Certified EKG Technician, Certified Phlebotomy Technician and/or Certified Pharmacy Technician exams. A registration form must be filled out for considered for this course. 10-12 students are placed in this course per year and is offered only to seniors.
