Course Description:
Chemistry II is a college level course designed for the high school student and can only be taken after successful completion of the first chemistry course based on North Carolina’s Essential Standards. Honors Chem II will provide students the opportunity to study college level chemistry, participate in and design intensive laboratory experiments; investigate applications of chemistry outside the classroom.
Students can continue into AP Chemistry to further explore Chemistry, and possibly earn college credits.
Honors Chemistry II at Southern Alamance HS is organized around the Six Big Ideas of the AP Chemistry curriculum set forth by College Board.
Big Ideas:
1. Structure of Matter: The chemical elements are fundamental building materials of matter, and all matter can be understood in terms of arrangements of atoms. These atoms retain their identity in chemical reactions.
2. Property of matter-characteristics, states, and forces of attraction: Chemical and physical properties of materials can be explained by the structure and the arrangement of atoms, ions, or molecules and the forces between them.
3. Chemical reactions: Changes in matter involve the rearrangement and/or reorganization of atoms and/or the transfer of electrons.
4. Rates of chemical reactions: Rates of chemical reactions are determined by details of the molecular collisions.
5. Thermodynamics: The laws of thermodynamics describe the essential role of energy and explain and predict the direction of changes in matter.
6. Equilibrium: Any bond or intermolecular attraction that can be formed can be broken. These two processes are in a dynamic competition, sensitive to initial conditions and external perturbations.

Take Class!
Everyone is encouraged to take dance. Just sign up for Dance Beginning to enter the SAHS Dance Department! No previous experience is required.
Additional Opportunities
Once students become involved in the dance program they can apply for membership to our National Honor Society for Dance Arts. Performance opportunities are also available for everyone in the department.
Auditions
Auditions are not required to sign up for Dance Beginning or to progress in levels in the program. Auditions are required for our specialization course such as Choreography class, Dance Company class, and for our extracurricular Dance Team. Email Amber Peeden by February 17th for virtual audition information.
