Welcome to Western
Welcome to Western Alamance Middle School and congratulations on being the newest BRAVES. We are so excited to have you in our classrooms. The learning adventures ahead will be challenging but the beginning of a new chapter you won't soon forget.
First Day Update for Students
Welcome to English Language Arts
Welcome to my class. I hope you are ready for an adventure in reading, learning, problem solving, and critical thinking. This year is going to be like no other, so I am excited too. First, we are going to learn using an interactive notebook and technology, read some amazing works of literature, engage in new vocabulary and interact with many diverse cultures through writing. Be ready to embrace new ideas and work alongside your classmates. Together we will buckle up and SOAR to new heights!
SUPPLIES for CLASS:
· 2 NON-SPIRAL composition books (bring one now and leave the other at home for later)
· Colored Pencils
· Elmer’s School Glue - 2 bottles (bring one now and leave the other at home for later)
· Green Plastic Folder with prongs (MAKE SURE it is STURDY!)
· Five texts that we will begin the year with, Wonder by RJ Palacio, Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper, and Hatchet by Brian Paulson, A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, and Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls.
GRADING for CLASS:
The grade you earn in this class is all up to YOU. We will have several activities that will be graded. I do not believe in giving you assignments if it will not be graded and I also don’t believe in BUSY work. Instead of “cramming” at the end of the year for End of Grade testing we will be using our strategies throughout the year so you will become familiar on how to succeed at testing.

Questions & Contact Information:
If you have questions about your grades, topics, general confusion, please ask. I can be reached via email: firstname.lastname@example.org and usually between classes. I do check my email after the school day so don’t hesitate to message me then too.
Meet Mrs. Dobson
My name is Tonya Dobson and I can not wait to have you enter my classroom. We work really hard in my room but we also try to make it fun and exciting every time you come to class. This starts my third year teaching at WAMS and I really enjoy middle school students. This will be my 13th year teaching all together with most being in elementary school. I grew up in New Hampshire with my parents and graduated from the University of Southern Maine in 1993 with a Bachelor's degree in English. I worked for several years and then decided to go back to school to pursue my passion of teaching. I graduated from the University of New Haven with my Master's degree in Education. My life has changed a great deal since way back then! Now I have a wonderful husband, Matthew and we have three amazing boys. Their names are Luke (16), Jackson (15), and Max (12). We also have two fabulous furbabies, Duck & Andi. We are a very active family that seems constantly on the run to watch someone play a sport. I wouldn't trade it for ANYTHING.
