Academics and parent resources

Our district follows the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.

  • English Language Arts

Reading, Writing, Foundational Skills (Book & Print Awareness, Handwriting, Phonics, Phonemic Awareness), Language, Speaking and Listening.

Literacy Block: whole group and small groups, 2.5 hours per day, balance of phonemic awareness, phonics comprehension, fluency and vocabulary instruction.

  • Math

Math Block: whole group and small groups, 1 hours per day, strong emphasis on number sense.

  • NC Essential Standards for Science and Social Studies

Thematic Units: Integration of Science and Social Studies content into Reading, Writing, and Math Instruction.

Communication

Alamance-Burlington Schools utilizes the ConnectEd communication system for important phone calls, emails, and text messages. The information you submit via the Kindergarten registration form, will automatically be uploaded to the ConnectEd system.

Additionally, your school and teacher may use apps (Blooms, Remind, Class Dojo, Class Tag, etc.) to communicate with parents on a frequent basis.

PowerSchool

Alamance-Burlington Schools utilizes the PowerSchool platform to house important data and student grades. PowerSchool provides parents the opportunity to access a variety of information about their child(ren), including:

  • Attendance (real-time)

  • Grades, assignments, and test scores with teacher comments (real-time)

  • Electronic progress reports

  • School announcements

  • Schedules

  • Course Registration

Health Assessment and immunizations

Visit our School Nurse website for important information about Kindergarten requirements. Kindergarten students must have an NC Health Assessment Transmittal Form, completed by their healthcare provider, on file with the school nurse.

ABSS School Nutrition operates under the Federal Program for the National School Lunch and National School Breakfast. If you would like to apply for free and reduced priced meals, visit the Child Nutrition website for more information.

If your student has food allergies, please communicate with your school nurse.
