Dual Language
Immersion Program

What is Dual Language Immersion?

Dual Language Immersion is a unique opportunity for families who want their children to participate in the academic program while learning a second language. Spanish is more than a subject taught, instead the language is used during everyday instruction.

Middle and High School Options

Middle School Dual Language Options

In middle school, ABSS Dual Language students can continue their dual language experience by participating in three year long courses that continue to build upon the formal usage of the Spanish language through interpersonal listening/speaking, presentational writing, interpretive reading, and interpretive listening:

6th Grade: Conexiones I

7th Grade: Conexiones II

8th Grade: Conexiones III

During the spring of the student's 8th grade year, Dual Language students are invited to take the ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL). The results of this assessment and the student's successful participation in the ABSS Dual Language program for a minimum of 7 consecutive years, may qualify the student to achieve Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM) for both Spanish I and Spanish II.

High School Dual Language Options

In high school, ABSS Dual Language students have a variety of options of their choice:

  • continue with advanced Spanish courses

  • begin a 3rd world language

  • complete the global endorsement high school requirements

  • enroll in the ACC Spanish interpreter certificate program (11th & 12th graders)

Congratulations to the first graduating class of Dual Language students in ABSS!

Participate Learning Preview

Participate Learning connects teachers and students through global education programs to foster human understanding. Since 1987, they have partnered with districts, like Alamance-Burlington Schools, to provide cultural competency that prepares students to contribute to the world community and compete in the global marketplace.

How do I get my student enrolled in the Dual Language Program?

There is an application process for families to complete for their rising Kindergarten student. This is in addition to the district kindergarten online enrollment process.

If you do not live within the school zone, you will need to complete the “Dual Language Out of School Zone Placement Request” and attach the request to the application.

The deadline for the application is March 25, 2022. A lottery will be used for placement of students in the Full Immersion or 50/50 Immersion classrooms. Students not enrolled after the lottery will be placed on the waiting list. Once students enter the program a commitment is made for the duration of the year unless extenuating circumstances prevents continued enrollment in the program.
