Assessment in 21st Century Classrooms is an interactive e-learning experience that offers an in-depth look at assessment that meets the needs of 21st century teaching and learning. In this course, teachers see how assessment strategies can benefit their teaching practices and their students’ learning. They learn how to plan, develop, and manage student-centered assessment. They follow three teachers who are implementing embedded and ongoing assessment methods in their classrooms. The course offers opportunities to apply the assessment concepts with action planning exercises.

The concepts of data literacy are introduced in the “Introduction to Data Literacy” module (data location, comprehension, and interpretation) will be explored further. The module will introduce a data interpretation cycle that can be used to inform instructional decision making. It will then address four key topics in depth: (1) asking relevant questions, (2) developing and testing a hypothesis, (3) selecting a solution to implement and test, and (4) implementing the solution, evaluating the results and communicating them to the relevant stakeholders.
This module is focused on classroom and school level decision making, targeting teachers, and principal and assistant principals. The module does not attempt to include district and local-level data-driven decision making.
The module should take approximately 10 hours to complete. You will earn 1 CEU on completion. Because of the content and length of the module, it has been designed to be completed over a period of days or even weeks. Spreading the completion of reading and activities over a period of time, will help you process the content better and get the most out of each section.

This mini-module is designed for school level educators who serve as members of a data team or who will be charged with building capacity to develop local data teams. The mini-module will explain the data teams process and how to use data teams to implement data-driven decision making at the classroom level. Participants will: develop an understanding of data teams and how to analyze and utilize relevant data to make informed decisions on a continuous basis; and develop a plan of action to effectively incorporate data teams to improve student achievement. While this module will provide participants all the information and tools required to launch an effective data team, the team's overall efforts will be optimized by effective implementation strategies, personal and team commitments, and broad-based stakeholder support. It will take approximately three (3) hours to complete this module.
In this self-paced ABSS Canvas course, participants will self-evaluate their level of the data & assessment focus of the Digital Learning Competencies. Participants will dig deep into data & assessment and explore resources to grow their knowledge base. Furthermore, they will create artifacts to show what they have learned. Lastly, participants will connect with other educators from around the state to discuss experiences and to collaborate. This course is intended for teachers in K-12. The content of this course was built by the NC Department of Public Instruction, Digital Teaching and Learning Division and includes three leveled modules. This module provides an introduction to data literacy. It includes information on types of data, strategies for analyzing and understanding data, and processes for determining how these can influence instructional practices. In order to design effective instruction and learning environments, educators need to determine what learners know, and effectively use evidence collected. This module aims to provide learning experiences that develop or enhance abilities to find, evaluate, and use data to inform instruction. This module should take approximately four hours to complete.

NCCAT Online courses are self-paced modules. Depending on the course, participants can earn 5 or 10 contact hours in the areas of literacy and digital competencies. NCCAT does not award CEUs. ABSS does accept contact hours from the NCCAT Online courses towards CEUs. Certificates will be emailed by the end of the quarter for those who successfully complete the course.

Twitter can be a valuable tool to support student and educator learning. In this module, discover how to use Twitter in the classroom and for communicating with students and families. Learn how Twitter supports formative assessment, resource sharing, collaboration, individualized learning, and Professional Learning Community. This session will start with the basics - no prior experience with Twitter is required. Twitter?s many potential benefits will be described, using real examples. We will also discuss challenges, obstacles, and pitfalls of professional Twitter use. Participants will be provided with resources that will support their exploration of Twitter beyond the module.
