Hi, my name is Rayan. I am 11 years old. I am working in the Ozone Protectors group. I am really interested about air pollution and all sorts of things that can cause it. One fact about me is that I love Maths
For LOI 1 I did a poster to show the causes of air pollution. From my research I found that there are a lot of causes which is bad for the environment as we all know.
Here is some of my research :
How burning garbage waste effects the environment :
Open burning of garbage waste
Burning typically releases particles and chemicals into the air when waste is burned, including plastics, coated paper, and chemical products.
Burning materials, such as garbage, plastics, and wood, is harmful to the environment because these things release toxic chemicals that pollute the air. Polluted air can be inhaled by humans and animals and plants.
Pollutants from burning backyard waste are released into the air, near ground level, where they are easily inhaled, with no pollution controls.
Burning household garbage creates pollution that's dangerous to human health and contaminates the air, water, and soil
Burying garbage also leads to air and water pollution, and simply transporting it to sites consumes an increasing amount of valuable fossil fuels, resulting in more pollution and other problems. A typical plastic garbage bag buried in a landfill takes 1,000 years to decompose ( starts to rot ) and detoxify ( to get rid of the poison ) as they do.
In my perspective I think countries should not burn garbage because it affects the environment, people, animal homes and the OZONE LAYER which is bad for Earth. If countries stop doing that air pollution will decrease. When countries burn garbage the ozone layer gets holes in it which makes it very dangerous. What happens is that the Earth gets warmer because the ozone layer protects the Earth from the sun. So when there are holes in the ozone layer the Earth will get hotter and it can melt !! People, animals, plants and the whole world will be in danger.
CARS
Car pollution is one of the major causes of global warming. Some countries like the USA, UK , and more have electric cars that use no fuel but charge a battery, which is great because it doesn’t affect global warming .
Well we are not in the USA or UK, we are in Oman.
Oman depends on oil and fuel, because Oman has a lot of oil, so they trade it and it helps Oman a lot and so Oman can gain a lot of money from oil. In my perspective, maybe others won’t agree, but I think that Oman will take many years, maybe even more than 10 years to use electric cars because they depend on oil and fuel.
During Covid-19 there was less car pollution, because people didn’t really leave their houses much. Now people are leaving and things started to get kind of normal and the same way they were before, but not really because Covid-19 is still travelling around the world.
The effects of car pollution:
Car's engines release poisonous gases that pollute the air, especially the extremely harmful greenhouse gas called carbon monoxide. ... It is easy for children to get sick from carbon monoxide, so make sure that you are not in a place where you are breathing in the gases from a car.
FACTORIES
Factories pollute the air by blowing chemical fumes and smoke through vents and chimneys, and by burning waste in open dumps.
Factories and power plants produce large amounts of smoke into the atmosphere which pollutes the air. They pollute the air and the water. When the air, soil and water are polluted with toxic chemicals, emissions of harmful gases in the air through different sources like factories can be a major problem.
Factories also have chimneys that bring out the harmful chemicals and smoke. Not all factories have really bad effects. People who live near power plants and factories or in cities, where they are exposed to more polluted air are also in danger.
For LOI 2 I made a video that shows some of my research and some of the effects of air pollution:
Here is my reflective essay:
