Vatican City

Welcome to Vatican City, a small nation where the head of the Catholic Church is located. Inside the city is St. Peter's Basilica, which is where we're headed next!

St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City

The elaborate Basilica known today didn't always look this way. It was started in 329 AD by Emperor Constantine, and underwent many changes until Gian Lorenzo Bernini completed it in 1633. Today, it is the church that is used by Catholic Popes for mass. It is large enough to fit over 60,000 people inside. The dome was constructed and improved by artists like Michelangelo and Brunelleschi!

What style of art is present at the Basilica?

Baroque - an artistic style of the seventeenth century characterized by complex forms, bold ornamentation, and contrasting elements.

  • Human bodies and forms that embody realism

  • Gold/gilded paint, lots of colors

  • High contrast and use of light/darkness
