CONTEST PROCEDURES

Events have been split into two morning sessions. Campus Coordinators will share start times with families during the week prior to the contest, and a Contest Schedule with all event start times will be posted at Hartford Learning Center on the day of competition.

Please direct questions during the event to district staff or to your school representative.  Preliminary results will be communicated via the contest website when they become available.

ARRIVAL

Students should arrive during their assigned check-in time and report to the front gate. Representatives will greet students and take them to the Learning Annex to await competition.

Please park and walk students to the front gate on the South side of the campus to drop off AND pick up your student(s). A site map has been included for reference and is also available on the website.

PICK UP

Parents will need to arrange for pick up following the competition. Please park and walk students to the front gate on the South side of the campus to drop off AND pick up your student(s). A site map has been included for reference and is also available on the website.

FAMILY ATTENDANCE

Families may not gather/wait in the cafeterias, academic hallways, or event rooms. Families are welcome to wait outside in the parking lots.  All students will be released from competition to the Cafeteria to wait for their parent or guardian.

DRESS CODE

Participants must adhere to the school dress code when participating in a competition event. It is suggested that students dress in layers to be able to adjust for any temperature changes.  Some events, such as Storytelling and Oral Reading, require students to appear before a judge. It is suggested that participants in these events dress up for the event, i.e. “Sunday dress.”  UIL rules prohibit the use of costumes.

CONTEST ENTRY & RETURN

Event staff will assemble students approximately 15 minutes prior to each event start time. Once the students are escorted to their contest room, tardy students will not be allowed to enter. Alternates will be free to leave after monitors escort contestants to their respective event rooms. Most events take 1 hour to complete. However, some of the speaking events like Storytelling and Oral Reading will have a preliminary round and a finals round. If your student advances to the finals round, these competitions may last a little longer.  If your student advances to the final round, these competitions will last approximately 30-45 minutes.
