Class overview
This class is taught with a communicative approach and a focus on Comprehensible Input; this means that we focus on using Spanish to communicate with each other (rather than studying about the Spanish language). The language is delivered to students through conversations, videos, and written material that we create together as a class (to keep it interesting and relevant to students’ lives!), as well as through materials selected by the instructor (to ensure students receive a broad exposure to language and culture).
This approach is based on modern, cutting-edge research about how the brain acquires a second language. It may be different from how your parents or other relatives studied language, which may have been based on memorizing vocabulary and practicing sentences, often with many worksheets. Research in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) has shown that a communicative approach is more effective for developing proficiency in using a language.
