Language Tips
The development of language (listening, speaking, reading) is critical to children’s success throughout their school years and the rest of their lives. Language is tied to everything children learn or do in school.
Does your child:
Talk in sentences?
Follow two step directions?
Use language such as big/little, hot/cold, soft/hard?
Sing songs or recite nursery rhymes?
Talk about everyday experiences?
Ask questions?
Recognize his/her name in print?
You can help with this by…..
reading to your child,
talking with your child about what interests him or her,
using questions that have more than a one word answer (for example: why and how questions),
playing rhyming games,
letting your child know that what he/she says is important by showing interest,
encourage your child to ask questions.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s language development, you may reach out to Samantha Abila at 325-671-4594 ext. 4534.

Ready, Set, Go!
Can you believe it is our last month of school? The year has flown by and we hope that you will celebrate how much your child has grown and learned since we started school back in August. It has been a pleasure to walk alongside your family in preparing your child for Kindergarten. We will continue to provide meaningful learning activities up to the very last moment of our school year!
Your child’s teacher will be meeting with you one last time for a final parent conference. Together, you will look at the progress your family has made on the goals you set and celebrate the growth in your child’s School Readiness skills. We are so very proud of all that you and your family have accomplished.
In the classrooms this month, students will be learning through a theme titled, Ready, Set, Go! During this theme your children will focus on these concepts throughout each week:
Week 1 - We Can Do It - What can we do better together?
Week 2 - Try It! - What can happen when we try something new?
Week 3 - Growing Up - How have we changed?
Week 4 - Dream Big - We’re ready. What’s next?
This year your child learned how to work together with others, they explored and tried new things, they grew and matured, and now it’s time for them to celebrate and dream BIG for a bright future….You’ve got this!
Happy May! ☀️ It has been such a pleasure taking care of your kiddos and all of their health needs this year. As we are wrapping up the school year, here are a few reminders/helpful tips as summer starts.
🩺 Schedule your child’s yearly check up. Call your pediatrician now to get your child scheduled for their appointment. Don’t wait until the end of summer. If your child has recently turned 4, they will need vaccines before starting school in the fall.
🏖️ Water safety is a HUGE part of summer. Make a safety plan now! Drowning is the second leading cause of death in children ages 1-4. Remember that water accidents can happen ANY TIME there is water around, not just during planned water activities. It is important to be aware of the risks, be familiar with safeguards, and know what to do if an emergency happens. https://www.lifeguardyourchild.org/ has resources available for free. Take advantage of the info provided on this site. It could save your child’s life.
🥵 With the summer heat upon us, please make sure your child stays hydrated. Make sure they are getting several cups of water a day. Juices and sodas will not hydrate them!
😎 Wear sunscreen daily! Anytime your child is going to be outside they need to wear sunscreen. Sunscreen should be reapplied after sweating, swimming, or prolonged time outside.
I hope your families have a safe and healthy summer!

As the school year is coming to an end we are also closing up our Book Bag Buddy Program and the Cub Corner. Please if you have books from either one, send them in your child’s backpack. But that doesn’t mean you won't have anything to read with your child. The Abilene Public Library has 3 locations where you can check out books throughout the summer. All year round actually! We are also sending a Graduation/Summer book home with each child. Remember to keep reading and have some great summer fun!
Do you want to volunteer on campus with your child for field trips, fall carnival, community helper day, ect? There are 2 steps that need to be complete for that to happen.
1) Complete volunteer training with a Long Campus Personnel.
2) Complete district background check.

Conscious Discipline has a lot of great information for parents to consider when looking towards Kindergarten readiness. While Conscious Discipline recognizes that academic preparedness is vital, it stresses that “social development, emotional intelligence, and self-regulation are, in both the long and short term, more important to overall wellness” (Shannon, 2025). So how do we support children in developing the skills that foster learning? Some strategies suggested by Conscious Discipline are creating predictable rituals with visuals to help children feel calm and prepared, teaching them breathing techniques that will help them to focus and stay composed, helping them recognize and manage their emotions, and coaching them on how to solve problems through play (Shannon, 2025). When we look at school readiness through the lens of whole child development and promote language, reading, mathematics, and motor skills along with social emotional skills like communication, problem solving, and cooperation we are ensuring a strong start to educational success.
As always, I wish you well,

We finished our fall family event on October 31 and just like that it was November. Students participated in learning about the voting process by voting for their favorite community helper. The winner with most votes was the fire fighters! We are gearing up for a veterans day program and the music classes will do a marching rhythm parade for our veterans and active military parents. In addition the students are learning fall songs, games and activities. We have a long fall break coming up for Thanksgiving and we are thankful for our Long Cubs!
