Here are a few theme ideas in no particular order to get your mind flowing! Use these ideas as a starting point and come up with activities that accomplish your goal. I thought about creating individual pages with lots of ideas for each theme, but decided that this is an ideas page to get you thinking. It is not a 'planned for you' party page because then the plans won't be focused on your goals and objectives. That being said, if you do an internet search for specific themes, you will find lots of ideas! I also put together a Pinterest board with helpful links.

Use flickering candles, lots of cobwebs, and interesting lighting.
Make the house look unlived in (sheets on the furniture, picture frames leaning against the wall, etc.)
If you would like to make this party kid-friendly, give all the children "Monster repelling" glow necklaces to scare monsters away. I had a neighbor do this at a haunted house he set up in his yard and it was very effective.
Choose a favorite Halloween movie and do an online search for ideas.
Use black lights to make costumes and decorations glow.
Include glow-in-the-dark games.
You can go with friendly version of the classic monsters (werewolves and mummies for example), or focus more on fun monsters like those in Monsters, Inc.
Set up room to dance and include fun Halloween songs.
Have a costume parade and let everyone show off their costumes (make sure to take a video).
Give out prizes for the best costumes.
Assign your guests each a character and work together to solve a mystery during the party.
Give your guests enough notice that they can come up with costumes.

Serve pumpkin treats (pumpkin cookies, pie, bread, etc.) and a popcorn bar
Host a pumpkin carving contest (or a pumpkin painting contest if you don't want to deal with carving messes).

Funhouse-style decor can be pretty spooky.
Do some Halloween trivia games.
Have a fancy candlelight dinner with black/gothic decorations.
Arrange comfortable seating to turn off the lights and watch scary movies.
Mix up a variety of popcorn flavors.
Or for a more family-friendly party, make it a Scooby Doo marathon.
Provide lots of different concoctions with fun names so everyone can mix their own 'potions'.
Consider providing recipe cards.
Make sure to include dry ice and fruit garnishes.
Decorate with vibrant colors and traditional skulls.
