FAQ

What is school-based counseling?

School-Based Mental Health Counseling is an added level of support offered to students to help them overcome any mental health or social/emotional barriers that are affecting their learning. It is an added level of support for students as they work towards their academic and social/emotional goals.

how and when would we talk/meet?

We would schedule a time together that works best with your school schedule. Because we are working remotely, we would either talk on the phone or through Google Meet. We let you choose which method you are most comfortable with.

what is confidentiality?

What a student shares with their Mental Health Professional during a session is confidential. A student has the right to confidentiality between himself/herself/themselves and the service provider UNLESS a student gives permission for information to be shared, if a student or other identifiable person may be a danger to themselves or others, or if there are concerns for the student's safety or well-being. If you are a student who is experiencing these things it is okay to talk to a Mental Health Professional about them. We are trained to manage these types of situations, however, we will take steps to make sure that you feel safe and cared for.

what should I say to a friend that has made comments about hurting themselves?

Do not take it on yourself to talk your friend out of it, refer your friend to a trusted adult. Just be there to help your friend through this troubling time. Stay until a parent, trusted adult or school official administrator is able to take control of the situation. If the threat is an obvious emergency or if your friend is in imminent danger call 911 right away.

My parents are against counseling services/supports, what can i do?

Sometimes mental health can be a taboo/not discussed topic in families. Although we do need parent consent to provide school-based counseling services to students, there are other options for getting support. Check in with us and we can talk about other supportive resources you can utilize. Additionally, in outside therapy facilities, children 12 years or older can sometimes consent to their own treatment if they meet the criteria.

I would like to speak with someone, but I am not sure where to start.

That is completely okay! Many students are not sure where to start and often wonder if they should even talk to someone. If you are contemplating speaking with someone, the best thing you can do is just ask away! We are more than happy to answer any questions you might have. You can start by filling out a Virtual Walk-In Form or you can email us with your questions and we'll do our best to walk you through it.
