Behind The Scenes
Our school's quality improvement plan is a working document that gets updated every year. It's where we reflect on our practice as a school and put in targets for the next year.
Our School Handbook is a guide to the values, expectations, and policies that help our community thrive. Inside, you’ll find important information for students and families about daily routines, academic guidelines, and school-wide standards. We encourage all families to review it carefully and keep it as a reference throughout the year.
At Quarryhill we have adopted a Maths Mastery approach. Find out more by clicking on the video
Above is our Numeracy progression. It has an outlined pathway and a rational behind each year group. Simply, a teacher works through the small steps, making sure each pupil has understood it and connected it to the previous learning. You can ask the teacher what small step they are teaching and you will be able to see exactly what is happening in class!
We have completely revamped our literacy program by introducing VIPERS and phonics.
At our school, we use the highly regarded Read Write Inc. phonics programme to give children the best possible start in learning to read and write. This structured approach helps pupils develop strong phonics skills, enabling them to decode words confidently and build fluency in reading. Through engaging lessons, children learn to blend sounds, recognise common spelling patterns, and develop comprehension skills. Read Write Inc. also supports writing by encouraging accurate spelling and sentence construction, ensuring that every child becomes a confident and enthusiastic reader and writer.
Here are our literacy progressions. This is a little more complex than our numeracy progression as there are three distinct areas of literacy in the curriculum: reading, writing and listening & talking. In reading we are focusing on VIPERS. As for writing we have a progression for each year focussing on different types of texts. We use a phonics based approach for teaching spelling. We've linked videos below explaining some of these concepts.
