Stages of English Acquisition

Descriptors of the Stages of English Acquisition are outlined in the national guidance document, Learning in 2+ Languages.

These stages are: New to English, Early Acquisition, Developing Competence, Competent , Fluent 

Schools are required to keep acurate records of the English Acquisition Levels of their bi/multi-lingual learners. Please see Pages 33-39 of Learning in 2+ Languages for summaries of typical learner profiles at each stage.

Descriptors of Levels of Proficiency in English can be found on the Bell Foundation's website. They also have a framework for assessing pupils to see which level they are at.
