Although still in good condition, our piano has been through several repairs over the years and is now at risk of losing basic functionality.
Here is what our pupils have to say:
"I used the piano in M1 every lesson to practice my advanced higher piano pieces and the teacher accompanied me with my flute pieces. It was repaired a few times when I was at school so a new one would definitely be beneficial to help future music students develop." (LM, S6)
"A new piano would sound much better for accompanying our trad band every week." (EF, S3)
"Having the right instruments and equipment is the gateway to developing a lifelong love of music."(LG, S6)
"I would cry if the piano stopped working. A new one would be used to support our group rehearsals in the evening, especially in preparation for our March concert." (FB, S3)
"The teachers often use the classroom piano to give us live examples during our listening lessons which helps our understanding. " (AR, S5)
At Dyce Academy, we are raising funds to purchase a new digital grand piano for our main teaching classroom.
Our current model has served us well for the past 25 years, but it is now time for an upgrade. This new piano will support classroom teaching at all levels, from S1 to Advanced Higher Music. It will also be used daily by individual piano pupils, accompany students in instrumental and vocal performances, and support our extra-curricular groups, including the school choir. It is also a central part of our Senior pupil SQA music examinations.
Dyce Academy is also proud to be home to Aberdeen City Music School (ACMS), one of the Scottish Government’s Centres of Excellence. ACMS provides specialist music education for young musicians training professionally from across Scotland. While ACMS pupils are fully integrated into the academic life of Dyce Academy, they also receive intensive individual tuition, ensemble training, and performance opportunities. The teaching classroom, where the new piano will be housed, is a vital space for ACMS, used every evening for individual practice, lessons, and ensemble rehearsals. Many of our past pupils have benefitted from this instrument before going on to study at top conservatoires across the UK.
A digital grand piano offers many advantages over an acoustic model, including minimal maintenance (no annual tuning required), adjustable volume, transposition functions for vocalists, a variety of synthesised sounds, a recording function, and the ability for individuals to practise with headphones.
We hope to purchase the Yamaha CLP865GP, a high-quality digital grand piano that will meet the needs of both Dyce Academy and ACMS pupils. You can find out more about this model by clicking on the link under the picture.
As part of this project, we also plan to donate our current piano - which is still in working order - to the local Dyce community, ensuring it continues to be enjoyed for years to come.
Thank you for your support!
In order to raise the £4500 required for our new piano we launched a fundraising programme called "Sponsor A Key" in June 2025. Through this programme we are asking local businesses, families and friends in the Dyce community to sponsor one of the 88 keys on our new piano. We will then recognise these people on a giant piano displayed on the music department wall as a memento to those who helped us purchase the instrument.
As a thank you also to those who donated towards our cause, we will be offering tickets to a special event in the new school year to celebrate and highlight the many talented pupils who will benefit from the new piano and demonstrate the many different ways in which our piano will be used across the school.
We are hosting a fundraising concert on Tuesday 7th October - please see our event page for more information.
If you are interested in sponsoring one of our 88 keys you can contact us directly at Dyce Academy (tel. 01224 725118) or email our music department at laura.kirkwood@ab-ed.org . Alternatively, complete our contact form at the bottom of the page and we will get in touch with you.
Both staff and pupils would be extremely grateful for any donation we receive, no matter the amount.
