In their S1 and S2 pupils gained experience in all the curricular areas of the Broad General Education. S3 is the final year of this junior phase of the Curriculum for Excellence. Pupils should now start to think about the subjects which they would like to continue to study in more depth, and where they can improve on the skills and knowledge gained in S1 and S2.
All pupils will study:
· English
· Mathematics
· Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies
· Physical Education
· Personal and Social Education
In addition, pupils will be required to choose an additional 5 subjects.
Careful consideration should be given to ensure that sufficient breadth is maintained across their learning by following subjects across a range of curricular areas. When considering subjects, pupils should also take into account their proposed career pathways.
S4 marks the beginning of the “Senior Phase” of a pupil’s education, having followed a Broad General Education from S1-3. It is a time when pupils will undertake programmes of learning, often extending through S5 and S6 and beyond. By offering a range of qualifications, skills, experiences and opportunities from S4-6, pupils should be able to tailor their Senior Phase to enable them to progress on their chosen career or further education pathway.
All pupils will study:
· English
· Mathematics
· Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies
· Physical Education
· Personal and Social Education
In addition, pupils will be required to choose an additional 4 subjects.
S5/6 is the continuation of the Senior Phase of a pupil’s education, having undertaken National Qualifications during S4. It is a time when pupils may deepen their learning by continuing with subjects to a higher SQA level or choose additional subjects not studied since the Broad General Education. It is important that senior pupils continue to discuss their plans regarding their chosen career or further education pathways with Guidance and Career staff to ensure that they remain on track to achieve their aspirations.
Pupils will be required to choose 5 subjects and in addition to this they will all have:
· a block of study
· Personal and Social Education
· a chosen period of Enrichment from a range of offers
