Course Overview
This course is designed to build on and introduce new knowledge on the Fashion and Textile industry. Pupils will develop their problem solving skills as well as their creativity by completing this course.
Pupils will learn the different properties of fabrics and how the production and use of fabrics can have different impacts on the environment. They will use research techniques to discover trends in fashion and textiles and use these findings as well as their own ideas and creativity to create illustrations of fashion design ideas. Pupils will learn a variety of hand sewing and embroidery techniques and explore how these can be used in a variety of ways such as for embellishment, mending and creating products and garments.
Pupils will learn the ability to select, set up, adjust and use relevant tools, machinery and equipment safely and correctly. Pupils will create work using fabric patterns, various construction techniques and a variety of decoration techniques. They will learn how to identify the construction techniques on garments. Work will be recorded through online workbooks which will help to prepare pupils for the National 5 course.
Learning and Teaching Approaches
Pupils will use a range of technologies to complete practical work. Written work will be completed using ICT as well as some hand written tasks. New vocabulary will be introduced to pupils as we progress through projects to develop literacy skills. Pupils will use accurate measurements and calculations to cut patterns and measure seam allowances as well as for weighing appropriate quantities of dye for dying fabrics. Pupils will complete work and support each other within pairs and groups to develop confidence when using machinery and sewing skills.
Homework
Homework tasks will be set and completed on google classroom. Pupils will be encouraged to take practical work home to make improvements and to practise techniques.
Assessment Approaches
Pupils will be assessed regularly by the teacher and will be given ongoing feedback to improve their skills and techniques. There will be summative assessments to consolidate learning on fabric properties and construction techniques.
