Health and Wellbeing

As we are a health promoting school, health is a fundamental part of the curriculum and children are encouraged to develop healthy lifestyles. Our Health Education programme focuses on the mental,  emotional, social and physical wellbeing of our pupils.

Health and wellbeing is organised in 6 areas:

the wellbeing indicators

Wellbeing sits at the heart of the Getting It Right For Every Child (GIRFEC) approach and reflects the need to tailor the support and help that children, young people and their parents are offered to support their wellbeing.

A child or young person's wellbeing is influenced by everything around them and the different experiences and needs they have at different times in their lives.

To ensure everyone has a common understanding of what wellbeing means, the Scottish Government has described wellbeing in terms of eight indicators, which are Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible and Included. These are sometimes abbreviated to the acronym known as SHANARRI.

Getting It Right For Every Child is at the heart of all learning and teaching here at Braehead. We use the 8 wellbeing indicators below to ensure every child is supported to be a superhero in their own story.

Pupils are regularly asked for their feedback based on the 8 wellbeing indicators to ensure we get it right.

SCARF

Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship

SCARF is an online resource that we use to support teaching and learning of Health and Wellbeing.

Lessons specifically link in with Curriculum for Excellence experiences and outcomes and range across the 8 wellbeing indicators of:

Lessons are age and stage appropriate and are designed to be progressive.

Bounce BAck

A Wellbeing and Resilience Program

Bounce Back aims to help young people function well, both at school and in life. It provides practical strategies to help them cope with the complexity of their everyday lives and learn how to 'bounce back' when they experience sadness, difficulties, frustrations and challenging times.

Bounce Back integrates the teaching of important personal and social skills, broken down into units.

Each unit includes cooperative learning strategies, Circle Time, educational games, music, drama and much more.

Here at Braehead school we are very fortunate to have access to a wide range of outdoor learning.

Teachers aim to engage in outdoor learning at least once a week, either in the school grounds or outside.

Wee Green Spaces is an area of Scotstown Woods that classes regularly visit, where they engage in a wide range of health and wellbeing and interdiscinplinary skills related learning.

If you are a parent / carer of a child at Braehead school and wish to support your child's class visits during outdoor learning, please contact the school or speak to your class teacher.

SHINE

Braehead is part of the Schools Health and Wellbeing Improvment Research Nework (SHINE).

SHINE aims to help transform health and wellbeing outcomes for young people in Scotland through highgh quality, school-based health and improvement research and data-driven innovation

As part of this, children from P5 to P7 are annually offered the opportunity to engage in a questionnaire to gather data and build a picture of the health and wellbeing at our school. All data is anonymised and helps us to identify our strengths and next steps for improvement.
