IDL Learning (TOPIC)

Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL), sometimes called topic work or cross-curricular learning, brings together knowledge and skills from different areas of the curriculum to help children make meaningful connections in their learning. Rather than learning subjects in isolation, pupils explore a shared theme or topic and apply skills from areas such as literacy, numeracy, science, social studies, technologies and the expressive arts.

At Braehead, interdisciplinary learning provides opportunities for children to investigate real-life contexts, develop creativity and problem-solving skills, and deepen their understanding by making links across different subjects. This approach helps learning feel relevant, engaging and purposeful, while encouraging children to apply their knowledge and skills in a variety of ways.

Session 2026-27 Topics

Thinking squares

Thinking squares are used at a one method of assessment of IDL topics to help. Children are asked the same questions, linked with the focus of their learning, before and after their topic.

Termly Overview

Week 1

Teachers make use of Clouds of Wonder and Thinking Squares to link up what children want to learn with the curriculum.

Week 2-6

Teachers deliver a range of cross curricular learning, planning for opportunities to embed knowledge, skills and understanding.

Week 7

IDL Week where pupils answer the Big Questions and apply skills and knowledge gained over previous weeks to engage with a high quality assessment.

Week 8

Whole school celebrates and shares pupils learning.

Pupils complete Thinking Squares demonstrating improvements in learning.
