The S3 Drama course has been carefully structured to ensure clear progression to National level.
UNIT 1 is designed to allow pupils to get to know each other and forge relationships, which is crucial to success in this course. The unit gives pupils a refresher on target audience, form and genre, as well as how to structure various dramas for a range of purposes. Key terminology is refreshed in this introductory unit.
UNIT 2 gives pupils the opportunity to learn about key elements of historical theatre practices: Greek theatre, Shakespeare, and Melodrama. This allows pupils to understand how modern theatre has evolved. Different staging type are explored, as well as key voice & movement terminology, which is essential for success at National level.
UNIT 3 allows pupils to explore alternatives to acting, as at National level pupils are allowed to specialise in one area of their choice: Acting, Lighting, Sound, Set, Props, Costume or Hair & Makeup.
UNIT 4 embeds key terminology in form, structure and genre, essential for National 5 written exams, as well as an introduction into research, which is a crucial part of the National 5 practical exam.
UNIT 5 teaches pupils how to develop character using rehearsal techniques which are central to National level practice.
UNITS 6 & 7 give practical explorations of the entire National 5 course, allowing pupils the chance to experience a taster of the National 5 course so that they are fully prepared for the next year. This unit includes National 5 level questions and guidance on how to answer them effectively.
