Course Overview
This course is designed to introduce learners to some of the key skills and concepts involved in working in the travel and tourism industry.
The course comprises of four mandatory units:
1. Employability – In this unit learners will investigate the range of jobs available in the travel and tourism industry. Learners will develop their skills to become effective employees within the travel and tourism industry.
2. Customer Service – The aim of this unit is to allow learners to develop practical skills to enable them to interact effectively with customers and meet individual customer needs. Learners will develop their communication skills as well as the skills required to promote products and services.
3. Scotland – In this unit learners will develop their knowledge of the travel and tourism industry in Scotland using a variety of media and field trips. Learners will devise and promote a holiday package to meet the needs of a customer travelling to Scotland. Learners will also examine tourism trends in addition to the positive and negative effects of tourism.
4. UK and Worldwide - Learners who complete this unit will be able to carry out an investigation of travel and tourism in the UK and in the rest of the World.
Learning and Teaching Approaches
A key feature of this course is the emphasis on experiential learning. This means learning through practical experience and learning through reflecting on experience. Learning programmes will include some of the following:
Learning through real or simulated workplace settings
Learning through role play activities in vocational contexts
Carrying out case study work
Planning and carrying out practical tasks and assignments
Assessment Methods
Scottish Studies is assessed via four units. There is no external exam. The course will be offered at Level 4 and Level 5.
