Advanced Higher
Course Overview
The Advanced Higher French course provides candidates with the opportunity to develop advanced reading, listening, talking, and writing skills in the modern language, and to develop their knowledge and understanding of complex and sophisticated language in the contexts of society, learning, employability and culture.
The course is made up of three mandatory units:
Understanding and Using Language
Understanding Language provides learners with the opportunity to develop and extend the skills of reading and listening in a wide range of contexts and to develop knowledge, understanding and analysis of more complex and sophisticated language structures in the contexts of society, learning, employability and culture.
Using Language provides the learner with the opportunity to develop and extend talking and writing skills and to develop their understanding and use of more complex language in the contexts of society, learning, employability and culture.
Portfolio
The purpose of this unit is to provide learners with the opportunity to develop analytical, critical and evaluative skills through the study of complex literary texts or media texts in the modern language. This is done in the pupil’s own time. The portfolio is prepared in school, but marked by the SQA.

Assessment Methods
The Course assessment is externally assessed and composed of the following three components:
Component 1 (Exam):
Paper 1 (25%) - Reading (30 marks) and translation (20 marks)
Paper 2 (35%) - Listening (30 marks) and Discursive writing (40 marks)
Component 2
Performance- talking (25%) - Talk with Visiting SQA examiner (50 marks)
Component 3
Portfolio (15%) - Essay, in English, 1200-1500 words on literature and/or media text studied (30 marks)
Entry Requirements
Higher French at Grade A or B
