Engineering Science

The Higher Engineering Science Course provides a broad and challenging exploration of engineering. Learners extend and apply knowledge and understanding of key engineering concepts, principles and practice; understand the relationships between engineering, mathematics and science; and apply analysis, design, construction and evaluation to a range of engineering problems with some complex features. This course is composed of the following 3 sections:

Electronics and Control:

Learners will develop a deep understanding of electronic control systems. Pupils who complete this Unit will be able to: develop analogue electronic control systems, digital electronic control systems and programmable control systems for mechatronic systems.

Mechanisms and Structures: 

Learners will develop a deep understanding of mechanical and structural engineering systems. Pupils will analyse and explore the science and design of: drive systems, pneumatics, structures, forces, energy and materials.

Engineering Contexts and Challenges: 

Learners will develop a deep understanding of the broad discipline of engineering, and its role and impact on our society and environment. Learners will investigate complex engineering systems, problems and solutions, involving some existing and emerging technologies, and consider implications relating to the environment, sustainable development, and to economic and social issues.
