National 4

Course Overview

National 4 English offers learners opportunities to develop and extend a wide range of skills, including communication, independent learning, critical literacy, personal, interpersonal and team working, and creative thinking. 

Learners will develop their listening, talking, reading and writing skills by analysing and creating texts, essential for learning, life and work.  Learners develop the ability to understand and use language in practical and relevant contexts.

The National 4 English course has 4 mandatory units:

Analysis and Evaluation

Learners will develop listening and reading skills and demonstrate the ability to understand, analyse and evaluate straightforward written and spoken texts.

Creation and Production

Learners will develop talking and writing skills and create original, straightforward written texts and spoken interactions.

Literacy

Listening, talking, reading and writing are assessed and learners must demonstrate technical accuracy and awareness of purpose and audience.

Added Value Unit

Provides opportunities for application and challenge as well as independent learning.

Assessment Methods

National 4 English is internally assessed on a pass/fail basis.  Learners must pass all internal units to successfully achieve a course award.

It is important to note that National 5 English may be taught concurrently with National 4 English. Learners will be presented for certification at the level most appropriate to them. National 4 courses are not graded.

Learning and Teaching Approaches

A range of learning and teaching approaches will be used including: teacher exposition; group work, discussion; individualised learning; self-evaluation and peer assessment.  Home learning may include the completion of class tasks; ; preparation of talk and the re-drafting of written work.
