The aim of the NPA in Horticulture at SCQF level 4 is to provide a broad practical introduction to Horticulture. This includes developing knowledge and skills required to propagate and maintain a range of plants including fruits and vegetables. In addition, learners will become familiar with the safe operation of horticultural tools and develop an understanding of how plants grow and develop.
The course has two mandatory units:
Allotment Gardening
Plant Propagation
At least one other unit will also be completed from:
Soft Landscaping
Soft Landscaping: Introduction to Plant Groups, Selection and Use
Horticultural Composting
Plant Identification
Plant Health
Organic Gardening: Edible Crops
Across these units pupils will have opportunities to develop the following skills:
communication, numeracy, ICT, problem solving and working with others.
Assessment Methods
There is no final exam. The course is assessed on an ongoing basis with a mixture of practical and theory assessments.
Learning and Teaching Approaches
The NPA in Horticulture at SCQF level 4 is a practical qualification allowing learners to develop, practice and demonstrate a range of skills. A wide range of teaching strategies are used with classes, such as practical and experimental work, direct teaching, paired and/or group work. Pupils will prepare presentations, projects and carry out investigations. Work in class is supported through the use of course plans, ICT and other media.
