Reading Mastery III:
In Reading Mastery 3 we are moving right along in our textbook. Every night your child should read all of that day’s story with you. The nightly reading should take about 15 minutes with you sitting next to your child and making sure that they are pointing and allowing you to notice if they misread a word. This will better prepare them for class rather than rereading the lesson they did that day at school. After you finish reading together, please initial their bookmark on the back of their book.
Reading Mastery IV:
In Reading Mastery 4 we are reading the enchanting book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which is immersed in our reading materials. The students are doing a great job of writing complete sentences and continuing their oral reading every evening.
Remember to sign after reading each evening.
Saxon 3 Intermediate:
In math the students are working tenaciously. The students who perform the best in math long term are strong in their addition and subtraction facts. Remember to check over and sign the fact sheets each day. The students will be working on rewriting numbers by regrouping tens and ones, writing fractions, writing decimals with money, and adding and subtracting two and three digit numbers with and without regrouping.
Saxon 5/4:
The Saxon 5/4 students have been doing a remarkable job. The students who perform the best are strong in their math facts. The students will take timed addition or subtraction fact tests 3-4 times each week during the month of October. If you don’t have some already at home, I recommend investing in some flash cards for all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). As the year progresses, the math lesson become more complicated. Not having to think about the math facts makes it just a bit easier.
HISTORY: We will sail right into our study of the Viking with their long ships. The students will study about the raids and their adventures of exploration into Iceland and Greenland. We will end the month beginning our study of the Spanish explorers Ponce de Leon, Coronado, and Hernando de Soto.
SCIENCE: During the month of October we will continue our study of Force and Motion.
Our next spelling test is test 15. The lists need to be tackled like a daily piano practice. It is too extensive to study in one night. Find a routine time every day to study the words.

In October, your child will review previously learned numbers and will continue to learn numbers up to 1000. In addition, students will practice numbers with spelling with addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication.
We’re falling into October with some exciting stories. In addition to continuing to read Pollyanna, everyone will enjoy hearing the tales from Norse mythology. We will learn of the quests of Odin, the tricks of Loki, and the hammer of great Thor, the God of thunder.
Furthermore, the students will read a poem, “By Myself,” and learn how to write couplets similar to the ones in this poem. We will concentrate on prepositions this month, and learn how “they are a special group of words, that connect a noun or a pronoun to the rest of the sentence.”
