A seed library is a place to share seeds, promote seed diversity, and grow both gardens and community through shared knowledge and resources. Patrons are encouraged to take seeds, share their experience, and when able, donate seeds collected from plants. Just as diverse communities enrich our lives, seed and plant diversity is vital to our well being and future. A seed library provides a place to share our stories, resources, and knowledge. HOW TO TAKE SEEDS:
1. Find the seeds you want in the catalog.
2. Take the amount you will use by portioning into the small packets provided for you.
3. Write out the planting instructions on one of the growing templates.
4. Sign our guest registry to tell us which seeds you took and your gardening plans &/or thoughts about the experience.
HOW TO DONATE SEEDS:
1. Put dry harvested seeds in a clean envelope with your name and as much information about the seeds as possible. Please, only non-GMO seeds.
2. Sign our donation registry with your name and any additional information about your seeds or story as you'd like. Thank you!!
3. Slauson Seed Library volunteers will divide up the seeds into smaller packets and alphabetize in the catalog.
We have had generous donations so opted to catalog our seeds with the entire packet of seeds. As most urban gardeners don't have the space to grow an entire packet one type of plant, patrons are encouraged to take what they can use by pouring a portion of the seeds into a smaller packet and writing out the directions on the growing template. Some seeds are donated by individuals in the community and divided into smaller packets with instructions. You are welcome to take the entire packet in that case.
EASY (Green) - beginner seeds, can put right in the ground at the appropriate time.
MEDIUM (Yellow) - Will require some spatial planning &/or structural support.
HARD (Red) - Need to be started as seedlings indoors before planting in the ground. Will need to plan out 4-6 weeks before putting in the ground.
Garden Club days, Wednesdays from 3:30-4:30 on the Slauson Deck.
