My volunteering experience has not only helped countless animals, but it has also shaped who I am today. When my older sister first started volunteering at HSHV, I was still in camp paws! I was so jealous of her, but I waited patiently until I came of age. On my 12th birthday, I entered the lottery for becoming a volunteer, but unfortuantely I didnt make it in. Thats when I found Tiny Lions!Â
I finished my training there, and immediately started signing up for shifts. It quickly became my favorite thing to do. Scooping the litter, cleaning the floors and tables, feeding the kittens, every task made a difference. I made friends big and small that I will never forget. I still volunteer at Tiny Lions to this day! After a couple months, I got accepted into the main shelters volunteer program!
During my training at HSHV, I made so many friends, humans and animals! Now that I have over 100 hours working at the shelter, I can officially say it is the best thing that has ever happened to me. It may not seem like a big deal to some, but I know to the animals I work with, it means everything. Dogs wag their tails, cats purr, bunnies play, and I know my work is making a difference. If there are no JV approved animals I help with laundry, cleaning, and other jobs where people are always grateful for the extra hand. HSHV feels like my home away from home.
Places like HSHV and Tiny Lions inspired me to continue helping animals, even in other countries! Over this summer, I traveled to Costa Rica to volunteer at the Jaguar Rescue Center. It was an amazing experience, and I was able to bring knowledge back from the rescue center to help animals here in Michigan!
