Every year, the 5/6 classes host a Bartering Benefit.
The 5/6 students made goods to "sell" on June 6th. Kids from other classes came to the benefit to trade things. The goods that kids from other classes brought were donated to the Delonis Center Adult Homeless Shelter.
Food Gatherers was very pleased to pick up our unexpected donations today! They brought what they thought was an oversize lift and we couldn't even fit everything inside!
The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County volunteer who took in our donation was teary as she thanked our community for meeting a desperate need. She told me how in the last two weeks there have been two occasions when she has had clients who have been in need of underwear and she's had none to give. They have been completely out of socks and underwear for a month. They couldn't believe the bounty that we were able to deliver. Using very rough estimation, we donated about $3000 worth of products and $295 cash/checks.
Thank you to the staff who supported this project and communicated with families and students to make the process as smooth as possible. Thank you to the families who stepped up and purchased the goods that were specified by the SAWC (reflective clothing, wool socks, tents, etc.). These donations will have a huge impact on people in our community! Thank you to the 5/6 students who worked hard and created some truly fantastic goods and services for our students to barter for!
