After a year without an in-person drama club, Alfred Almond put on an online show, titled “The Show Must Go Online.” Despite many people’s concerns about having an online performance, the drama club pulled off an enjoyable performance which far exceeded most people’s expectations.
In the story, a certain drama club was preparing for their dental hygiene musical, “Brushes with Greatness,” before COVID-19 hit and canceled the live performance. Without the money from the performance, the principle called the drama director (played by Amber Weinar) to inform her that next year’s production will be canceled as well due to the lack of funds. However, the students were determined to provide for next year’s production and developed an online rendition of the musical to generate funds for the club. With the help of celebrities spreading the word about the production, there were enough views to save the club from going under and not having a performance the following year.
While the performance didn’t have as many options as a live production, the show took full advantage of what was available to them. Personally, I enjoyed the nonchalant, ironic humor woven into the story, as well as how they used their “online captivity” as an opportunity to crack a couple quarantine jokes. Additionally, the writers did a superb job at developing an intentionally cringey, artificial play about dental hygiene to mask the disadvantages and awkwardness of recording at home. Lastly, the talent was spectacular! Quite a few of the students caught me off guard with their stellar voices, which made me all the more excited to see them in next year’s live performance.

The Alfred-Almond prom occurred Saturday night, June 5. Despite the Covid regulations, our school was finally able to come together and organize an event for the Junior and Senior student body to enjoy. Although it couldn’t be scheduled at Lake Lodge like usual, the school’s courtyard served as a great venue for the gathering thanks to the tents, tables, and dance floor provided for FREE by Bud’s Event Rentals (585-683-6548).
Being outside allowed for loads of new possibilities regarding activities and definitely helped with maintaining a safe social distance. There were various games, such as kan-jam, cornhole, and ping pong to be played as well as countless flavors of ice cream to munch on throughout the evening.
At the event, the Prom King , Queen, Prince, and Princess elected by the attendees were announced. The winners of the prestigious titles of King and Queen were none other than Grant Watson and Andrea McMahon! Liam Harris and Jessica McMahon rightfully won Prince and Princess. Be sure to congratulate the winners if you happen to see any of them!
