Story by: Kiara Wisniewski. Senior spotlight is where special seniors get recognized for their dedication, talent, hard work, and other admirable qualities. A student athlete is picked each month to be the Athlete of the Month, along with a student (or a few students) to be the Scholar of the Month. To become an athlete or scholar of the month, a teacher or coach must put in a nomination. For scholars of the month, each department gets to be represented one month of the year, and athletes of the month are chosen during a month where they play their sport. Photos by Mrs. Chambliss.
Kiara Wisniewski, was chosen as September’s Athlete of the Month for Girls Varsity Tennis. Wisniewski has been playing tennis for a total of 8 years; she was on the Varsity Tennis Team for four years, plus two on modified. This year she was Team Captain as well as the team’s First Singles player, and participated in both team and individual sectionals.
Dylan Coots, was chosen as October’s Athlete of the Month for Boys Varsity Soccer. Coots has been a member of the varsity team for four years, playing both right forward and center mid. Coots was a Team Captain this year, and pushed for his teammates to care for and believe in one another. Coots plans on continuing to play soccer in college.
Several people were chosen for the October Scholar of the Month, all of whom were picked by the visual arts department. One of the five scholars, Aiden Kinney, states that he finds art “very therapeutic and rewarding,” and gets enjoyment through illustrating his interests and completing his art pieces. Kinney, an AP Drawing student, excels at both horror art and anthropomorphic animal characters. Jin Wilson states he is best at pencil and paper sketches, and has been interested in art for roughly six years. He is currently both a ceramics and AP art student, and loves to draw and express characters he likes while also giving them some of his own touches. Hanne Yocum,is also both an AP art student and a ceramics student. Yocum stated she has been making art pretty much all of her life, and is best at digital drawing. Yocum is proud of her opossum mural outside of the art room, and has her heart set on continuing her love for art. Maria Graziano and Anastacia Miller were also among those chosen for the October honor.
Jessica McMahon was chosen as November’s Athlete of the Month for her participation on the Girls Varsity Soccer team. McMahon has been playing since she was three years old, and plays as a defensive sweeper and sometimes a central defender, depending on the team’s formation. She is a team captain, and was named a Steuben County 1st Team All Star, as well as a Steuben County Exceptional Senior. Her favorite game this season was the team’s sectional game in Gananda because the team went in as an underdog and beat the 3rd seed.
Miles Muhleisen was chosen as November’s Scholar of the Month by the instrumental music department. Muhleisen has been playing for 11 years, and knows how to play two instruments--so far. First he learned how to play the piano, and then learned how to play the baritone saxophone. His favorite music to play is jazz, and plans on a future in musical composition.
