What courses will I get to take in STEM?

The classes required for Freshman year are Intro to Engineering, Computer Science Principles, System Science A, and Project Based Learning!

STEM 9th graders are required to take different courses in order to dabble students into different course material and help find out what students like!

Can STEM students play sports and participate in extra-curriculars?

STEM students can definitely maintain a balance between their rigorous classes and sports. STEM students are given a 1-hour block during the day called NEST to complete any work they would like; in addition they receive time after school to complete their work before practice. Ultimately, it comes down to managing their time effectively.

How much homework will I get every night?

It depends on the teacher.  However, STEM students have access to teachers during Nest or Flex times. Teachers will have set study times for students to ask questions or make up assignments.

Do we have to wear our STEM uniform everyday?

The STEM uniform is only used when we leave the school for Job Shadowing events and other field trips. The STEM uniform is a navy polo and a set of khaki pants, shorts, or a skirt. You will wear the STEM uniform the most in 9th grade because freshman year is when you go on the most Job Shadowing field trips. Eventually, once you get to 11th and 12th grade, you will not have to wear it as much and instead opt for business attire anytime you leave the school.

Will I be able to take classes with my non-STEM friends?

Most of your classes freshman year will have only STEM kids in them, but as you get into higher grades like 11th and 12th, you will get more freedom. Until then, you can meet your non-STEM friends during lunch, clubs, and sports. You will definitely make lots of STEM friends because you will be in classes with the same 100 kids for 4 years, so don’t worry!

When do I pick a pathway?

You will pick your pathway around the second semester of your freshman year because this will decide the courses you take from 10th grade on. There are 5 pathways: computer science, earth and space systems, green technologies, PLTW, and nanotechnology.
