"Slow and Steady" Anastasia Gobot
The editors, staff, and readers would like to thank those who submitted art and writing to this year's Literary Arts Magazine. Without you, this magazine would not have been possible. It takes courage to publish your poems and print your art, and for that, we thank and acknowledge you. Without creative visionaries, things would go unsaid - unexpressed. Georgia O’Keefe once said, "I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for." And that is what you accomplished by publishing your art in this year's Impulse - you made a little bit of the unknown - known. Additionally, to all those who submitted poetry and prose, we encourage you to keep doing what you are doing. "You can make anything by writing." (C.S. Lewis) You have made this magazine, and you have made something honest too. Once again, thank you, and may we leave with one more quote from Friedrich Nietzsche, which encompasses part of the beautiful spirit of Severna Park High School’s Literary Arts Magazine: "A good writer possesses not only his own spirit but also the spirit of his friends."
Hello Readers,
Our school was rebuilt just a couple of years ago. It was rebuilt with many things in mind, such as efficiency and sustainability. But without its students, Severna Park High School is a bland building. It's no more special than a doctor's office or a bank lobby. The students who pace through the hallways are what decorate Severna Park. They do so with their style, voices, and personalities. But once the bells ring and the hallways are empty again, the charm of our school disappears once again. Except in the art hallway, where beauty has found its way into corners, upon benches, and onto shelves. It hides outside the library, a display of the people's creativity who make SPHS more than just a new building on a busy road with a horrible intersection. The creative writing and art produced by the students of SPHS are chronicled here in the Impulse Literary Magazine, which attempts to provide a lasting testament to the beautiful souls that wander the hallways between classes. Being published, this magazine is a part of our history now, represented by more than a few of Severna Park High School’s outstanding students.
At the beginning of most art classes, one is introduced to several principles of art, one of which being “Line,” which happens to be the theme of this year's Impulse Literary Arts Magazine. The definition of a line is “a point moving in space.” A line is the trace of a point’s path. In the path of a point, one sees its history and a foretelling of its future. One sees lines in art. They tell a story of an artist. They speak of paintbrush strokes and pencil scratches. But there are also the lines of a poem, essay, or story. Each of which also begins with a point and traces it, giving the reader its past, present, and maybe even future. In this magazine, you will find lines trailing behind a single point, a single impulse.
