Angling for a bit of fun? Explore our friends with fins and catch 'em outside!
“Fish watching” is a bit more difficult than watching other wildlife. People can’t easily see through or move about in the water world of fish. Besides aquariums, check state hatcheries and fishways for opportunities to watch fish. Fish can be directly observed in the shallows of clear lakes and streams. Choosing a calm day and wearing polarized sunglasses will help greatly in reducing glare off the water. Good spots to look for fish are a dock, bridge crossing, or some other high vantage point over a calm area in a stream or along the shore of a lake. Be very still and patient and train your eye to catch the slightest sign of movement
Do you know we have more animals with fins than just fish in the Chesapeake Bay? There are many marine mammals in the bay. Dolphins sometimes come into our rivers - not just the bay. Occasionally, even Florida Manatees and Humpback Whales visit the Chesapeake Bay!
Marylanders under 16 do not need a license for fishing. You can also "fish" for crabs from shore with hand lines and dip/scoop nets - be sure to check with Maryland DNR for any regulations regarding fees, locations, equipment and licenses for fishing and crabbing before heading out for a day of fun. Be sure to be patient!
