The CHANGE Project at AMS

C.H.A.N.G.E.: Community Helpfulness Anywhere Needed to Generate Empathy

Introduction

With the IB MYP Community Project, eighth-grade students at Annapolis Middle School seek to make a positive impact in a local or global community through service as action. Past AMS eighth graders voted to name this initiative "The CHANGE Project" (Community Helpfulness Anywhere Needed to Generate Empathy). Now, you have a chance to follow in their footsteps by taking action in your community to make positive change.

Why participate?

  • This project encourages you to explore your right and responsibility to implement service as action in the community. You will develop an awareness of needs in various communities and address those needs through service learning.
  • Through this project, you will meet the county requirement for service hours needed for completing middle school.
  • You can help to make a positive change in a local or global community.
  • You will have an opportunity to apply the skills you have developed during middle school and gain self-confidence as you prepare for high school.

Timeline

During IB Community in the fourth marking period, you will work through the following steps of the project:

Step A. Investigating: You will explore options for service in the community, choose and research a problem, and set a goal for the action you will take.

Step B. Planning: After choosing a service opportunity, you will develop an action plan to meet your goal.

Step C. Taking Action: You will put your plans into action by participating in service.

Step D. Reflecting: You will reflect on the process and evaluate the growth you experienced during the project.

In June, you will present your work at an exhibition in the media center. Students, teachers, parents, and community members will be invited to attend.

You may choose to work on a service project individually, with a partner, or with a group of no more than three people. Throughout the process, each student will record information and developments in a process journal. For those of you who choose to compile your work digitally rather than in a paper folder, you can join the AMS Community CHANGE Project group on Google Classroom using the class code gnftx8x.
