artist statement
I believe art constitutes as the transfer of any thought into a real and tangible object, and that the flaws that come with said transfer are the foundation of the artists' unique style. We have the concept in our mind of what we want to create, but very rarely does the finished product look exactly how we envisioned. This goes back to Plato's forms in that our mind serves as a canvas for perfect entities, but the real world (including the beings who inhabit it) is flawed. For instance, when we think of a circle, it is perfectly symmetrical and proportioned. But drawing a circle (unless you have a great deal of skill) is usually flawed in some capacity. This concept expands out further encompassing all varieties of artistic mediums: that our idea is perfect, but the product is flawed. I use this to my advantage in painting because I know that no matter how ideal the concept, the painting will only loosely resemble what I had planned, and this can be freeing. Instead of dwelling on minute details, I go into paintings relatively blind and let the ideas flow onto the canvas. I usually will look at the painting and the first color, object, word, or combination of the three that I think of, I put onto the work.
