History:
Shakespeare's play, though full of murder and magic, is based on events and people that really existed. For example the story of Macbeth,s murder of king Duncan though inaccurate in the story did happen but not in that way. In the play Duncan is depicted as a brave leader and ruler but in truth was a weak ruler who led his army through a number of unsuccesful campaigns. Eventualy his men had had enough. In 1039, Duncan led a large Scots army south to besiege Durham, but the expedition ended in disaster. Duncan survived, but the following year he led an army north into Moray, traditionally seen as Macbeth's domain. There he was killed, at Pitgaveny near Elgin, by his own men led by Macbeth, probably on 14 August 1040. So Duncan was not murdered because of an insane Macbeth' he was murdered simply for being a poor leader. Macbeth did succed Duncan but far from being a tyrant he was a good, respected and wise ruler, far more so than Scotlands previous ruler.
The Macbeth in the play is shown as a good man who is driven by evil to kill the king and take the throne for himself. In the play he is shown as a devious murderer who kills the king in his sleep and then frames the guards like a coward. In truth Macbeth got his crown in a very different way. King Duncan is shown in the play as a wise and aged ruler. In truth at the time of his death he was a very young ruler. In the play he is shown to be a good military strategist who is able to defeat Scottish rebel but in reality he was a poor leader who led his army through a number of disastrous campaigns that ended in humiliating defeat. It soon became obvious to many that he was unfit to rule, these people who had lost faith in Duncan turned to Macbeth, Duncan’s cousin. Macbeth with strong support rebelled against Duncan. Duncan went to face Macbeth with his army at Moray on the 15th August 1040.In the ensuing battle Duncan was killed and Macbeth claimed the throne of Scotland. So far from being a cowardly murderer he was a powerful man who decided to remove an unfit king Duncan. Duncan’s wife then fled Scotland with her two sons Malcolm and Donald. The only serious resistance to Macbeth’s removal of Duncan was by Duncan’s father Crinan of Dunkeld. He led a resistance movement against Macbeth but was soon crushed by Macbeth’s army in 1045. Macbeth ruled Scotland for many years and proved to be an effective and generous ruler with fierce opposition against England and its designs on Scotland. Macbeth’s downfall came when Malcolm (The son of Duncan who had fled to England.) returned to Scotland with an English army and Scottish supporters. The English king gave Malcolm this army because Malcolm was more English friendly and the king would prefer to see him than aggressive Macbeth on the throne. Macbeth was able to escape during the invasion but was finally killed with the rest of his men at Lumphanan. Malcolm would later become Malcolm the third of Scotland after defeating and killing Macbeths heir to the throne, his stepson Lulach who only held onto the crown a short time after the death of his father and eventualy he too was killed by Malcolm who would later become Malcolm the third of Scotland.
