Your Rights as a Parent
If your school-age child qualifies under the federal McKinney-Vento Act, your child has the right to:
Receive a free, appropriate public education;
Enroll in a school immediately, even if you lack the documents that are normally required for enrollment;
Attend school while the needed documents are obtained;
Continue to attend their school of origin or enroll in the local school*;
Upon your request, receive transportation services to and from your child's school of origin; and
Receive educational services comparable to the services that are provided to other students and fits your child's needs.
*If the school district determines that the school you want your child to attend is not in the best interest of your child, the district must provide you a written explanation of its decision and inform you of your right to appeal the decision.
