(Extending Education into the Community)
What is Community-Based Learning or Work-Based Learning (CBL-WBL):
CBL or WBL provides real-world experiences for 11th-12th grade students by using the community as an extension of the classroom (grades 10-9 may participate under special request). Students are better prepared for choices after high school by participating in community experiences related to career and personal interests. CBL is an elective course ranging from an in-depth placement with one organization to a series of exploratory job shadows. Students work with the CBL-WBL educator to develop learning plans to complete documentation for academic credit. Students must meet prerequisites in order to participate, including capabilities as a self-directed learner.
Students must complete all requirements to earn elective credits (#6 below ‘student agrees’). Credits are awarded based upon a combination of competencies and approximate hours of learning: 61 hrs.=½ credit; 122 hrs.=1 credit; 183 hrs.=1½ credits; 244 hrs.=2 credits (annual maximum). Students typically participate for 2-10 hours per week with a career mentor and to complete project work. Hours may accumulate outside of the school day, including evenings, weekends and holidays. (Generally, this does not include summer, unless self-directed and an educator is a participant--a project presented during the school year is required for completion.)
The South Royalton School Community Learning Educator has worked to ensure that Vermont Educational Standards are being met; to learn more about the Vermont Agency of Education Work Based Learning Standards, please see: http://educ..../vermont-work-based-learning-standards.pdf....
