January Newsletter
Dear Parents/Guardians,
A very “Happy New Year” to you and your family. I hope that you had the merriest of holidays and enjoyed a fun and healthy school vacation. We are all looking forward to the second half of the school year and are welcoming the many new and exciting curriculum topics to come.
I would like to take this time to give a special thank you to my first grade
parents for your thoughtful and kind gestures. Thank you also for your nightly assistance with your child’s practice and school responsibilities. Your continued support at home with reviewing our first grade reading and math skills as well as reinforcing good work habits is very important to your child’s learning experience for many years to come.
“Children are like little stars but it is their parents that truly make them shine.”
Enjoy a healthy, happy, and prosperous 2025!

Curriculum News
Into Reading
At the start of the month we will be finishing up Module 5: Now You See It, Now You Don’t. Next, we will begin Module 6: Celebrate America where students will explore how holidays and symbols help us learn about and celebrate our country. We will read books about national symbols and learn how holidays honor our country and its heroes.
Writer’s Workshop
Children will write a personal narrative about a favorite holiday memory.
Math
In Eureka2, students will continue to use the unit of ten to make easier problems by decomposing addends and grouping them in any order. They intuitively apply the associative and commutative properties and then learn how they can use strategies such as counting on, making ten, taking from ten, subtracting to get to a ten, and relating operations to break down larger addition and subtraction problems.
Science
Our class will be learning about animal habitats, hibernation, animal tracks, and the basic needs of animals throughout the winter months.
Social Studies
This month, we will explore the Polar Regions - the Arctic and Antarctica. The
locations and characteristics of these regions will be compared and contrasted
through the use of maps and globes. Our “Person of Distinction” for January will be Dr. Martin Luther King.
