Welcome to the homepage for Mr. Ontl's Principles of Chemistry class. The formal definition of chemistry states that it is "the study of matter and its reactions". But that doesn't give us a good feel for how Chemistry touches our lives every day and influences just about everything we do or come in contact with. Discoveries in Chemistry have led to major changes in cultures and individual's lives. The video below explores how chemists synthesize new molecules that can help cure diseases and save lives.
Principles of Chemistry is a semester-long course designed to follow and build upon the knowledge of chemical concepts learned by students in Comprehensive Natural Science - Chemistry - Biology class that most students took during their sophomore year at LHS. The course is divided into six units of study. The concepts covered include periodicity and the periodic table, chemical reactions, the mole concept, stoichiometry, the behavior of gases, and acids and bases.
After students have successfully completed the semester they may enroll in other chemistry classes (AP Chemistry [2 terms] or Chemical Applications [1 term]) that are offered at LHS.
