Students are required to take three years of a laboratory science and pass the Biology MCAS test to fulfill graduation requirements at Wakefield Memorial High School. Most students enroll in 4 years of science/engineering, with some students choosing to double enroll during junior and senior year. All science classes are considered laboratory science classes and follow the Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Curriculum Frameworks, which focus on developing skills in three areas: relating conceptual understanding of core ideas (content), science and engineering practices (skills), and application of those to the natural and designed world. As a result, students will be able to apply and transfer their school learning to civic, college, and career contexts.
Incoming 9th graders begin by taking Biology, followed by Chemistry and then a science class of their choice. There is a wide range of courses available across many science, computer science, and engineering disciplines. Students who are interested in pursuing a science major in college should consider taking 4 years of science which should include Physics. Students may take more than one science/engineering course as space allows.
The school's annual Program of Studies offers a detailed description of each course listed below.
