Literacy

This week we reviewed long “i” word families -ine (line, mine) and -ive (live, hive).  Students did some more practice with adjectives (describing words).  We also talked about the difference between possessive nouns that need an  ‘s (mom’s coat, the dog’s leash, etc.) and plural nouns that just need an  -s (five pencils, three apples, etc.).  Then student did a sort page to practice.

Math

Since Chapter 12 was such a short chapter, this week we did three days of measuring objects in inches, so students could get some practice using rulers.  On Wednsday, we started Chapter 13: Time.  In first grade, students are introduced to the hour and minute hands and telling time to the hour and half hour on an analog clock.  It’s a difficult concept for some, because there are so many digital clocks around.  They will also learn how to write time in a digital format.  It’s a short chapter, so we will be doing some extra days of practice, especially on time to the half hour.  Any practice you can do at home will help – telling time to the half hour is difficult for them (point out where the hour hand is.  Ex. at 2:30, it’s between the 2 and 3.  I often say “it’s halfway to the next hour”).

Science

We have started a new unit called Living Things.  The first lesson is called Plant Parts.  I brought in some different flowers for students to observe with magnifying glasses.  They looked closely at the leaves, cut stems, and flowers of a lily, a mum, a rose, and a snapdragon.  Then they drew what they saw in their science workbooks.
