Reading

5th Grade Homework: Reading Logs are sent home EVERY MONDAY. This is the only homework assigned to 5th graders this year.

It is expected that students read for AT LEAST 25 minutes a night to keep building their reading skills. This Reading Log will be sent home every Monday. Students will record what and how much they have read each night, then turn the Reading Log into Ms. Knapp on Friday or Monday. If students prefer to type their reading logs and submit it through email, that is fine. Emails can be sent to jknapp@winooski.k12.vt.us.

October 3rd, 2019

We have had a very busy first 6 weeks in Reading Class! We have spent a lot of time practicing the Reader's Workshop and the different parts of it. Students have settled into the routine well.

Next week we will begin our first reading Unit "Analyzing Themes." In this unit we will:

-Read books and ask the question "What is the author trying to teach me here? How is this book changing me and my thinking?"

-Connecting character's actions and reactions to our own actions and reactions.

-Read a variety of text around social issues in our own lives and around the world

How can you help at home?

-Have your child read for 20-25 minutes a day.

-After your child has read, ask them "What did you learn from this text?" and "How has this text changed your thinking?"
