Lesson Plans

On days school is in session, Title I Reading Intervention groups will be working in the Sonday System.

Each Sonday System 1 and 2 lesson is constructed to include:

1. Read Sounds: A review of all sounds taught builds automaticity that provides a foundation for fluency and sets a positive tone at the start of each lesson. Shuffle the cards before each review to ensure that the students are reading each card and not memorizing the sequence of sounds.

2. Spell Sounds: Dictating sounds requires students to identify and write consonants and vowels, blends, vowel pairs, and affixes while reinforcing rules and place value and incorporating multisensory practice.

3. Read Words: Word lists and sentences in the Word Book reinforce previously taught material.

4. Spell Words: Dictated words carry the power of the lesson for students and supply both diagnostic information and proof of effective learning for the teacher. Dictate as many words as possible in the time allotted, leaving time to dictate at least one phrase or sentence and to allow students to read aloud the words, phrases, and/or sentences written. Emphasis is on the sounds and rules most recently taught.

5. Teach New Material: Students see, hear, repeat, and write the new element, then read and spell words incorporating that element.

Each Sonday Let's Play Learn lesson is constructed to include:

Homework: none

Assessment: Ongoing assessments are embedded into the program, every three lessons. Benchmark assessments are administered at the beginning, middle, and end of the year.
