The Edgewood Elementary School Chorus

The Edgewood Elementary Chorus was first formed as an ensemble in 1989.  The chorus was originally only open to 5th grade students, with rehearsals during the school day.  When chorus was moved to an after-school activity, Chorus membership was drawn from all three grades (3rd, 4th, and 5th). The chorus has operated continuously since 1989 under the direction of Mr. Cothern. Over the years we have had several wonderful accompanists and instrumentalists add to the performances.

The Edgewood Elementary School Chorus was not able to form during the 2020-2021 school year (Due to COVID having shut down singing as an activity), but did reform during the 2021-2022 school year.  The EES Chorus is an Auditioned Chorus which began with 52 Members for the 2023-2024 School Year.  The group has ranged from 30 to 120 members over the years.

The audition process requires that each student perform “My Country Tis of Thee” in three different keys.  When all interested students have completed their audition, the top scoring students are selected.

The group always forms an SSA Ensemble. Over the years, the chorus has performed for the Wilmington Festival of Trees, Autumn with Topsail 2000 and 2001, and appeared several times during the holiday season on WECT Channel 6. Several former members have gone on to become musicians at the collegiate and professional level.
