What is Guided Reading?

Guided reading is a form of group instruction in which a teacher helps children to develop understanding for the story while prompting them to apply strategies they will need to become independent readers.

Basic Framework of a Guided Reading Lesson

    • Form a Group
    • Select a Text
    • Introduce the Text to the Students
    • Support Students as They Read the Text
    • Make Teaching Points to Support Learning
    • Engage Students Actively in Word Work
    • Invite Students to Extend Understanding through Writing (Optional)
