Optional Accidental Insurance Information for School-Issued Devices

All students are highly encouraged to obtain insurance for their school-issued device (Chromebook, iPad, etc...).

If you decline to purchase the insurance for the device you are responsible for damage beyond reasonable wear and tear as outlined in the Loan Agreement.

Parents will receive an email with information about how to sign up for insurance. Please contact Steve Ouellette at souellette@westwood.k12.ma.us if you did not receive information about registering for insurance.

Parents/guardians of children in grades 6 - 12 will have the option to purchase a multi-year policy. Please select a term that makes the most sense for your particular circumstances. The cost of insurance is $30/year and it covers unlimited claims with no deductible. Malicious and/or intentional damage is not covered by this policy.

After registering for insurance, you will receive an email that includes an invoice and payment information. If you wish to purchase insurance for another child, you will need to repeat this process.

Thank you for considering the purchase of accidental damage coverage for your child’s device. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Steve Ouellette at souellette@westwood.k12.ma.us.

Chromebook/iPad Insurance FAQ's

- What kinds of accidental damage are covered by the insurance? What's not covered?

Drops, spills, theft, fire, power surge damage, natural disasters. Basically anything that isn't covered by the manufacturer warranty (we have 3 year warrantees on all Chromebooks). Intentional or malicious damage is not covered by this policy. The policy includes unlimited claims and no deductibles.

- If we opt not to purchase the insurance, what are the ramifications if my child's device is damaged?

The student is responsible for the material costs incurred by accidental damage. For example, a cracked screen replacement is approximately $40 - $50.

- How are repairs handled?

We self-insure our Chromebooks, meaning all repairs are completed in house. If we cannot reasonably repair a device, we will provide the student with a replacement device. iPads are repaired by a 3rd party repair facility.

- Will my child be given a loaner device if his/her primary device is damaged and needs to be sent out for service?

Yes, we provide loaner devices whenever possible to students while his/her device is being repaired.

- If a device needs to be replaced, will insurance coverage automatically roll over to the new device or do we need to sign up for a new policy?

The policy will automatically be applied to the replacement device.

- What's the typical lifespan of the distributed Chromebooks?

We are planning on a 3.5 year lifespan. Students will receive a new Chromebook at the beginning of 6th grade and again mid-way through their freshman year. This device given to students in 9th grade should carry them through to graduation.
